AB OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinico-pathological aspect of HIV/AIDS
inpatients. METHODS: We reviewed HIV/AIDS inpatients in our hospital
since 1988. We examined risk factor, CD4 counts, CD4/8 ratio, cause of
death and the survival time after diagnosis of AIDS. RESULTS: A total of
13 HIV sero-positive subjects were admitted to our hospital, including
11 cases (85%) with AIDS. One patient was a foreigner. All cases were
male; age range 18-70 years (median 30 years). Hemophiliacs and sexually
transmitted patients account for 62% and 38% of cases, respectively.
There were no cases of intravenous drug users. In all cases with AIDS,
CD4+ cells and CD4/8 ratio significantly decreased with median value of
78/micron and 0.19, respectively. Five cases (45%) were deceased;
interstitial pneumonia (2), HIV associated nephropathy (1), AIDS
dementia (1), malignant lymphoma (1). Findings of autopsy done in three
cases revealed systemic various infection, including Pneumocystis
carini, cytomegalovirus and candida. The median survival time after
diagnosis of AIDS were 26 months. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: We
controlled approximately 25% of the total AIDS cases in Kanagawa
prefecture. In Japan, hemophiliacs occupies the largest share in
HIV/AIDS cases, while sexual transmission increased, recently. We assume
hospitalized patients in Japan are rather small in number compared with
those in other countries.
